Radial Chip Thinning Calculator
Radial Chip Thinning Calculator
The Radial Chip Thinning Calculator is a precision tool used in CNC milling to adjust feed rates when the width of cut (WOC) is less than 50% of the tool diameter. In such cases, the actual chip thickness is reduced, which can lead to inefficient cutting, excessive rubbing, and premature tool wear if feed rates aren't properly adjusted.
This calculator helps:
- Compensate for reduced chip thickness at light radial engagements
- Ensure tools are cutting, not rubbing
- Extend tool life and reduce heat
- Improve material removal rates and surface finish
- Set accurate feed rates in high-speed and finish milling
Perfect for high-precision or high-speed machining, especially with modern carbide tools and small stepovers.

Note: The Radial Depth of Cut (RDOC) is equal to or greater than half
the cutter diameter. Chip thinning does not apply at full or near-full engagement —
use your standard feed rate (IPT × F × RPM).
